We consider dressing professionally is the outfit of choice for any interview, but deciding to what degree can be difficult. Instead, consider what your outfit says about your behaviour and performance. Now, we are not saying you should pull out your Halloween Spiderman costume for your next interview. When discussing the Superhero costume, Brownie and Graydon advise “their clothes are so unlike anything that ordinary people wear that the costume comes with the expectation of behaviour that is equally extraordinary”. This is no different to your interview outfit. From Spiderman to Captain America, heroes’ costumes define their unique powers and ability, thus, telling you they have what it takes to get the job done. ![]() So how do we change a possible negative first impression into a positive? We believe you should put on your best power costume and embody the Superhero. It seems pretty shallow and a bit unfair but it is a fundamental human motivation to read a persons’ “characteristics, intentions, traits, motives, goals, and needs of others” (J Skowronski & N Ambady) when you meet someone for the first time. If you mess this up, you will spend the next 30 minutes of your interview attempting to change their mind. ![]() Within the first 7 seconds of an interview your prospective employer will unconsciously think they have you sussed.
